When it comes to hobbies, an opportunity shop may be a great place to start one's search. A multitude of possibilities are available at a cheap price.

Having something to do to relax or take up some spare time can be a great thing. Hobbies, however, can be quite pricey. Opportunity shops can provide possibilities at a cheaper rate than found elsewhere.

Tactile Hobbies for the Hands on Person

There are many great things that can be purchased from an op shop and undertaken as a hobby. This may involve the likes of purchasing a board game to play, such as Robert Kyosaki’s CashFlow, or perhaps a puzzle that can be put together. Often wool can be available for sale or materials that can be acquired cheaply for the person that likes to knit and create clothes or other items with material and wool.

Most towns will have some form of opportunity shop or second hand store. The act of driving around and checking out various places can become a hobby in itself. Often stores in small country towns have incredible bargains that allow the buyer to really get their money’s worth.

Collecting Books from Second Hand Stores

Nearly every opportunity shop has a section for clothes and a section for books. Whether into magazines, fiction or fact, there are usually at least a couple of book cases full of well loved items.

For the book collector – and indeed, reading enthusiast – it can be a great adventure to search through all the titles available. It’s even possible that the searcher will stumble across that last novel to complete their Enid Blyton collection, or perhaps a book on a particular topic that they haven’t been able to find elsewhere. There are many biography books often available, and even books covering arts and crafts for the person who would like to add to their book collection and get their hands into creating something.

Sales at a Second Hand Store

Keep a look out for when these stores have sales, as further savings can be made. Many will advertise in local papers and may have deals such as:

  • Books at 10 cents each
  • One bag full of clothing items for a couple of dollars

Taking the time to browse these stores can provide the individual with opportunities not considered. You may stumble across a book on a topic you didn’t know existed, find an unusual board or card game or find a figurine that can be added to your collection. Whatever you’re searching for, the chances are that someone else has had that particular item at one point and perhaps once they’ve grown out of it or decided on a new hobby, they have gifted it to a second hand store to be found by a new owner.
